Stables

I'm not in the habit of recommending specific stables or outfitters for renting horses, as I do not use these facilities myself and have no first-hand knowledge of each stable.

However, I can relate what others have told me:

Tahoe Donner Equestrian Center has great, friendly guides and wonderful views. Offers standard & custom trail rides, Friday night BBQ & Hay Ride, pony rides & lessons. Truckee, CA. 530-587-9470. May - September.

Zephyr Cove Stables has good horses and wonderful views overlooking Lake Tahoe. Offers steak rides, breakfast rides, lunch rides. Zephyr Cove, NV. 775-588-5664.

Camp Richardson's Corral offers some limited views on hourly rides. Offers breakfast rides, steak dinner rides, wagon/sleigh rides and fishing/pack trips into Desolation Wilderness. Emerald Bay Road, Camp Richardson, CA. 530-541-3113

Cascade Stables has private trails to private Cascade Lake. Very nice area, Emerald Bay Road, CA. South Shore. 530-541-2055.

Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, Northstar, and Kirkwood Ski areas have horses for rent. Each one has spectular views from the ski runs, however, I have only ridden my horse at Squaw, so can't say if the public riding trails have the same views! Here are the numbers from our local phone book:

Squaw Valley Stables, CA. Highway 89 on Squaw Valley Road, between Tahoe City and Truckee. 530-583-7433. Offers one and two hour rides, half day rides, pony rides and lessons.

Northstar Stables, CA. Off Brockway Summit, Highway 267, between North Lake Tahoe and Truckee. 530-562-2480.

Ponderosa Stables, Incline Village, NV. 775-831-2154. All rides includes admission to world famous Ponderosa Ranch of Bonanz TV fame! --Note: The Ponderosa Ranch closed in Fall of 2004.--

Since I have my own horse, and ride the trails described on my site which are on Forest Service land or in wilderness areas, I do not have occasion to ride at the local stables. I'm sure which ever one you choose, however, you'll have a great time! Enjoy Tahoe and all the beauty it has to offer.
